Manusia lahir dalam keadaan tidak mengetahui sesuatu pun. Manusia memperoleh pengetahuan matematikanya dari proses berpikir dan berdasarkan pengalaman-pengalaman bermatematika. Berbicara masalah pembelajaran saat ini, pembelajaran tidak lagi menganut Teacher Center tetapi Student Center. Ini berdasarkan bahwa siswa sendirilah yang membangun atau merekontruksikan pengetahuan matematikanya sendiri.
Dalam merekontruksi pengetahuan matematikanya, mereka berbeda-beda dalam hal pola pikir. Pola pikir yang baik akan berimplikasi pada perilaku yang baik pula. Karenanya pola pikir siswa sangat mempengaruhi kualitas dan kuantitas hasil belajar matematikanya.

Pola Berpikir yang Bagus untuk Pembelajar Matematika yang Baik

Tau gak orang yang selalu meng-iyakan apa yang dikatakan Guru, lebih suka diam, serba dibatin, segan bertanya, ingin bertindak di luar kebiasaan tetapi takut ditertawakan orang-orang? Orang seperti ini memiliki Pola Berpikir Tradisional yaitu pola berpikir yang didapatkan dari kebiasaan lingkungan. Pola ini pasif, mencari-cari kebenaran dari hal-hal yang dibenarkan, artinya apa yang dikatakan benar itu bukan atas dasar logika tetapi diterima sebagai tradisi (karena memangnya).

Ada juga pembelajar yang gurunya dijadikan sebagai patokan ia dalam belajar, mengikuti apa yang diajarkan gurunya. Pola pikir ini disebut Pola Berpikir Follower. Pola pikir ini baik ketika mampu membuat kesimpulan sesudah mendapat premis yang kuat atau masukan dari gurunya, metode ini disebut metode silogisme. Contohnya guru mengatakan "Setiap bilangan yang dapat dinyatakan dengan a/b dimana b tak-nol dan a, b bilangan bulat maka disebut bilangan rasional". kesimpulan yang ditarik PBF, bahwa 3,14 adalah bilangan rasional karena dapat dinyatakan dengan 314/100. Pada pemikir follower tidak memerlukan semua contoh beda dengan pemikir tradisional bila belum diberi contoh akan selalu takut mengambil suatu keputusan. Tapi, pola pikir ini kurang baik ketika gurunya keliru, hingga meng-iyakan saja tanpa mencari tahu mana yang benar. Jadi, ketika guru dan orang tuanya beda jawaban, maka siswa cenderung kepada jawaban gurunya. 

Yang terakhir dari pola pikir adalah Pola Berpikir Competitor. Tipe ini umumnya terdiri atas orang-orang yang IQ-nya di atas 120, walaupun tidak menutup kemungkinan orang-orang dibawah 120 masuk pada tipe ini. Apabila orang-orang ini telah menguasai ilmunya lewat pendidikan atau otodidak, pola berpikirnya makin kuat. Bahkan, semua orang dianggap pesaing seperti dirinya tak terkecuali gurunya. Wataknya yang serba tinggi jelas tak mau diungguli orang lain. Terkadang, ketika gurunya keliru, ia berani mengatakan "bukan begitu pak", dll.
