Strategi Menyelesaikan Masalah
Bagi para siswa yang mulai menyukai matematika, mereka diberikan kesempatan untuk mengikuti berbagai even kompetisi baik yang diselenggarakan di tingkat kota, wilayah, atau pun nasional. Kegiatan itu bertujuan untuk menjajal kemampuan para siswa selain tentunya mencari bibit unggul untuk dipilih menjadi duta pada jenjang kompetisi yang lebih tinggi. Seperti OSN (Olimpiade Sains Nasional) dan IMO (International Matematics Olimpiad).
Secara umum, materi yang diujikan dalam kompetisi adalah aljabar, geometri, kombinatorika, dan teori bilangan. Materi-materi ini dikemas dalam soal-soal pemecahan masalah (Problem Solving). Mendapati tipe soal yang seperti ini, tidak sedikit peserta kompetisi seringkali membutuhkan teknik atau strategi tertentu. Strategi tersebut tidak didapatkan di bangku sekolah.

Behadapan dengan sesuatu yang tidak rutin dan kemudian berusaha untuk menyelesaikannya merupakan ciri khas bagi makhluk hidup yang berakal. Pemecahan masalah (Problem Solving) merupakan latihan bagi siswa agar terbiasa berhadapan dengan sesuatu yang tidak rutin dan kemudian mencoba untuk menyelesaikannya.

Pembelajaran pemecahan masalah tidak sama dengan pembelajaran soal yang telah diselesaikan ( Solved Problem). Oleh karena itu, membutuhkan berbagai teknik penyelesaian masalah. Strategi atau pun taktik untuk menyelesaikan masalah disebut heuristics, karena pada dasarnya pembelajar harus dapat menemukannya sendiri. Berikut ini berbagai strategi dari yang sederhana, sampai yang kompleks yang insya Allah dibahas pada kategori yang sama di blog ini.
  1. Menerka dan Menguji Kembali;
  2. Membuat Daftar yang Teratur;
  3. Mengasumsikan jika Sebagian dari Soal telah Terselesaikan;
  4. Menghapus Beberapa Kemungkinan;
  5. Menyelesaikan Soal yang Setara;
  6. Menggunakan Simetri
  7. Memperhatikan Hal Khusus;
  8. Menggunakan Alasan Langsung;
  9. Lihat Pola yang Muncul;
  10. Mensketsa Suatu Gambar;
  11. Memikirkan Soal Sejenis yang telah Diselesaikan;
  12. Menyelesaikan Soal yang Lebih Sederhana;
  13. Menyelesaikan Soal yang mirip;
  14. Bekerja Melangkah Mundur; dan
  15. Menggunakan Formula atau Rumus.
Karakteristik yang Harus Dimiliki
Bagaimana karakteristik yang baik bagi orang untuk mampu melakukan problem solving? Di Amerika Serikat, penyelidikan dilakukan oleh Dodson (1971); Hollander(1974). Menurut mereka kemampuan pemecahan masalah yang harus ditumbuh kembangkan adalah kemampuan:
  1. Mengerti konsep dan istilah matematika;
  2. Mencatat persamaan, perbedaan, dan analogi;
  3. Mengidentifikasi element terpenting dan memilih prosedur yang benar;
  4. Mengetahui hal yang tidak berkaitan;
  5. Menaksir dan menganalisa;
  6. Memvisualisasi dan menginterpretasi kuantitas atau ruang;
  7. Memperumum berdasarkan beberapa contoh;
  8. Berganti metode yang telah diketahui.
  9. Mempunyai kepercayaan diri yang cukup dan merasa senang terhadap materinya.
Langkah-Langkah Menyelesaikan Soal
Menurut Polya, ada 4 langkah dalam menyelesaikan soal, yaitu: 
  1. Memahami soal yang ada;
  2. Menusun suatu strategi;
  3. Melakukan strategi yang telah dipilih;
  4. Melihat kembali pekerjaan yang kita lakukan, apakah perluh menyusun strategi baru yang lebih baik atau menuliskan jawaban yang lebih baik.
Kiat Sukses Olimpiade
  • Bulatkan tekad;
  • Keinginan untuk mencari dan mendapatkan serta menguasai materi atau soal olimpiade;
  • Latihan mengerjakan soal-soal olimpiade dengan berbagai cara;
  • Jaga kondisi fisik dan kesehatan;
  • Evaluasi setiap saat dan jangan sombong sebab akan menjadi halangan untuk berkembang;
  • Ikhtiar disertai dengan doa.
